Ingredients
  

Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
Filling
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Ganache
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Gradually add boiling water, mixing until smooth.
  5. Stir in sliced strawberries and chocolate chips.
  6. Pour batter evenly into prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Heat heavy cream until simmering. Pour over chopped chocolate. Let sit for 1 minute, then whisk until smooth.
  10. Spread ganache evenly over one cake layer.
  11. Place the second cake layer on top. Spread remaining ganache over the top layer.
  12. Garnish with strawberries, if desired. Let the ganache set slightly before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet.
